July is the time for hitting the road for vacation or even just enjoying life close to home. We wanted to take a moment to remind all of our families who visit the Northcutt Dental offices in Fairhope, Semmes, Cottage Hill, Bay Minette, Hoover and Helena about keeping your smiles healthy and happy throughout summer.

Your Northcutt dentist knows that your family is always busy – no matter what season it is. Summer poses different issues with school being out and everyone looking for ways to stay cool and even get out of town to your favorite beach vacation spot. Here are some easy, helpful tips to keep in mind:

Remember Routines

1) The American Dental Association recommends that families stay on schedule when it comes to regular brushing and flossing routines. Summer nights are longer and lead to more fun, so the association recommends resisting the urge to skip brushing and get the kids to bed. It’s bad for teeth!

Don’t Forget Back-to-School Visits

2) While we’re on the subject of not breaking routines, it’s also a good idea to call our Northcutt Dental office to make sure your family is set up for their back-to-school visits and cleanings. It’s super important! The National Children’s Oral Health Foundation estimates that more than 51 million school hours are lost each year due to dental disease. They also found that nearly 17 million children go to school every year without dental care in the United States.

Skip (or Limit) the Sweets

3) Summer cuisine comes with a whole variety of fun treats that help beat the heat. Unfortunately, they can sometimes are loaded with sugar – that’s bad for you and your teeth – especially kids. Try to cut back on soda, sweet tea, sports, drinks, and other sugary beverages too. Soda is especially bad for adult and kid teeth because they increase acidity in your mouth that erodes enamel and eats away at your smile.

Choose Healthy Summer Foods

4) Summer cuisine also has the opportunity to be filled with vegetables and fruits that are good for your teeth and the rest of your body too. Every person at any age should eat a balanced diet that’s rich with fruits and vegetables with less processed foods. Nuts, grains, fruits, veggies, and some dairy products are your friends (depending on allergies, etc.) Make sure to include them in your summer spreads at your next family barbeque or party!

Your Northcutt dentist hopes your and your family enjoy the fun and excitement that summer near Birmingham, AL has to offer. If you have any questions about your smile or need to schedule your little one’s back-to-school visit, please don’t hesitate to call your neighborhood Northcutt Dental office. We always here for you, whenever you or your family needs us. That’s just a small part of the Northcutt Dental difference.
